A few facts to know what is Armageddon: (19:19, 21).
What is Armageddon?
The battle of Armageddon refers to the final war between human governments and God. Even today there are many governments and their supporters oppose God and God’s people (Ps.2:2). The battle of Armageddon will bring human rulership to an end just as Daniel explained in (Dan.2:44).
The word “Armageddon” occurs only once in the Bible, at (Rev.16:16). Prophetically, Revelation shows the place which is called in Hebrew Armageddon,” the kings of the entire inhabited earth will be gathered together for the war of the great day of God the Almighty (Rev.16:14).
Where is Armageddon?
Armageddon, in Hebrew called (Har Megiddon), means “Mountain of Megiddo.” Megiddo was once a city in the territory of ancient Israel. History tells that decisive battles were fought in its vicinity, some were recorded in the Bible (Jud.5:19, 20; 2 Ki.9:27; 23:29). However, Armageddon cannot refer to the literal area near ancient Megiddo. There is no large mountain there, and even the entire adjoining Low Plain of Jezreel could not contain all those who will fight against God.
Who will fight at Armageddon?
Jesus Christ will lead a heavenly army to victory over God’s enemies. (Rev.19:11-16, 19-21). These enemies include those who oppose God’s authority and who treat God and God’s people with contempt (Eze.39:7).
Will Armageddon literally be fought in the Middle East?
No. Rather than being restricted to one area, the battle of Armageddon will extend to the whole earth (Jer.25:32-34; Eze.39:17-20). Armageddon is the worldwide situation in which the nations assemble in their last stand to fight against God.
What will the conditions be like during the battle of Armageddon? While we do not know how God will use His power, He will have at His disposal weapons such as those He has used in the past viz. hail stones, earthquake, flooding downpour, fire and sulphur, lightning, plagues and disease (Job 38:22, 23; Eze.38:19, 22; Hab.3:10,11; Zech.14:12). In confusion, at least some of God’s enemies will kill each other, yet they will ultimately realize that it is God who is fighting against them (Eze.38:21, 23; Zech.14:13).
Will Armageddon be the end of the world?
It will not be the end of our planet, since the earth is mankind’s eternal home. (Ps.37:29; 96:10; Eccl.1:4). Rather than destroying humanity, Armageddon actually saves it, because “a great crowd” of God’s servants will survive (Rev.7:9, 14; Ps.37:34).
Sometimes the word “world” in the Bible refers to wicked human society opposed to God. (1 Jn. 2:15-17). In that sense, Armageddon will bring the end of the world (Matt.24:3).
When will Armageddon take place?
When discussing the “great tribulation” that culminates in the battle of Armageddon, Jesus said: “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father” (Matt.24:21, 36). Nevertheless, Lord Jesus gave us clues in (Matt.24).
At the great supper, the birds “will eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.” Such an extra-ordinary statement reveals the worldwide extent of the slaughter. This will happen to the entire God hating, rebels everywhere in the world.
Further John saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. The beast is Antichrist, leader of the last and the greatest empire in human history. The kings of the earth are the 10-kings (17:12-14).
Immediately the beast was seized along with the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped his image, these 2-were thrown into the lake of fire which is the final and permanent place of punishment for all who refuse to submit to Jesus Christ. “The beast” and false prophet are the first two persons to be cast into hell. Satan will follow 1,000 years later (20:10), along with him the people whose names are not recorded in the Book of Life (20:15). This is the first mention in Scripture of the lake of fire, which is the final hell, the ultimate destination of Satan, his angels and the un-redeemed. The prophet Isaiah described it as the place where “their worm will not die and their fire will not be quenched” (Isa. 66:24). The smoke of the torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night.
The rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
Today, when an unbeliever dies, his spirit goes to a place called hades, which means “the unseen world” that is, the realm of the dead. When believers die, they go immediately into the presence of the Lord (2 Cor. 5:6-8; Phil. 1:19-23). Hades will one day be emptied of its dead (20:13), who will then be cast into hell to join Satan, the beast, and the false prophet.
The overcomers: Each letter to the 7-churches concludes with a call to each member to be an “overcomer.” i.e. to overcome all temptations and pressures, both inside and outside the church. Jesus Says: “take heart! I have overcome the world”(Jn. 16:33). Overcomers are those people who have simple faith but relying upon the Lord in each and every situation. There are many blessings and prizes promised to the overcomers.
- The right to eat of the tree of life in the paradise of God.
- Never to be hurt by the second death.
- To eat the hidden manna and be given a white stone with a secret name on it.
- To have authority to rule the nations.
- To sit with Jesus on His throne.
- To be dressed in white and made a pillar in the temple of God bearing his name and never to leave it.
- The overcomer believer is promised a place in the New Heaven and earth, enjoying God’s presence for ever and ever.
