Demetrius the role model: (12-14)
The Demetrius of this letter is not to be confused with the Demetrius of (Acts 19:24), who was an enemy of the gospel. This Demetrius according to the Apostolic Constitution VII.46.9 was ordained by John as bishop of Philadelphia (now in Amman in Jordan).
John personified truth as a witness to Demetrius’s character and teaching. Demetrius had a high regard for the truth. The godly life and dedicated service of believers is always an encouragement and a stimulus to evangelists. The Apostle John had urged Gaius to welcome Demetrius into the church. It is not clear whether Demetrius was a local or travelling preacher or probably a member of group of missionaries. Apostle John gives a recommendation letter to Gaius which was quite common in the early church and even now also. He may even have been the postman who took the letters to the church. He was certainly known to them. Finally the Apostle encourages the believers to imitate Christ’s qualities.
